T. J. Crizer
name: Thomas J. Crizer
born Oct. 28, 1888, in VA
died Nov. 13, 1963, in Los Angeles, CA
This filmography of T. J. Crizer is somewhat sparse, mainly because of the lack of onscreen credits for
film editing in the early Roach silents. Since he was the head editor, he probably would have received credit on virtually
every film made by the company while he held that job. I've only listed those films for which I've come across a
credit.
1913
Crizer seems to have entered the film business in early 1913 at Essanay, where as Tom Crizer, he played
small parts in both the Broncho Billy and Snakeville series for the next four and a half years.

1917
Crizer joined Rolin at the end of October as a film editor. This was one of those duties that didn't
result in a lot of screen credits, at least not until the mid-twenties, so his filmography is somewhat sparse. He was
also utilized as a scenario writer during his tenure at Roach, and worked on the Harold Lloyd series in that capacity. It
stands to reason that he had at least some involvement in every Roach film made between late 1917 and early
1925.

1920
In Randy Skretvedt's Laurel And Hardy: The Magic Behind The Movies, a page from a trade
magazine is included, which shows portraits of the various heads of department at the Roach studio. This includes T. J.
Crizer, film editor. It was during this year that Richard Currier joined the studio, and he eventually was the head
editor. One of the perks of being the head editor is that you're the only one who gets credited for editing, even
though others are involved. However, Currier's name doesn't replace Crizer's in the credits until early 1925,
which suggests that Currier was a cutter until then.
1921
Towards the end of the year, pre-production began on the Our Gang series. Crizer worked as a scenario
writer on this series in addition to his duties as a film editor. It isn't known which films he worked on in this
capacity.

Crizer left the Roach studio early in the year, and the job of head editor went to Richard Currier. If we
assume that onscreen credit corresponded to time of release, then the transition happened sometime between February and
March.

It seems apparent that Crizer landed a job at Paramount sometime during the latter half of this year,
which may have had something to do with his involvement with other companies, like Lloyd and Christie, that released their
films through Paramount. By this time, he had left the field of film editing to become a writer.
